Dr Zhang received his BEng in engineering mechanics and MEng in solid mechanics from Dalian University of Technology (P.R. China) in 2007 and 2010, respectively, and PhD in geotechnical engineering from University of Newcastle(Australia) in 2014. Prior to joining the faculty atUniversity of Liverpool in 2018, he was a Research Associate at Australia Research Council Centre of Excellence for Geotechnical Science and Engineering and a Marie-Curie fellow at International Centre for Numerical Method

Abstract: The simulation of submarine landslides and their consequences has been a long-standing challenge. This ismajorlyowing to the strong coupling among sliding sediments, seawater and infrastructure as well as the induced extreme material deformation. In this seminar, a novel continuum approach – the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM)will be introduced with emphasis on its capability for stability analysis of submarine slopes. It will be shown that the complete process of potential submarine slope failurecan be predictedin asingle simulationusing this approach with the direct threat to a nearby pipeline and indirect threat by generating tsunami being estimated.
